Thesis project "Catalizador Chilote"
Chiloé is a province located in southern Chile in the tenth region, known for being an island with a unique identity, characterized by its landscapes, traditions, and architecture. This heritage identity has been shaped over time through the close bond forged between the Chilotes and the land and sea, with this maritime environment serving as the fundamental pillar for the development of their identity.
Chiloé es una provincia ubicada al sur de chile en la décima región la cual se caracteriza por ser una isla con una identidad única, caracterizada por sus paisajes, tradiciones y arquitectura. Esta identidad patrimonial se ha formado con el paso del tiempo y el estrecho vínculo que se forjó entre los chilotes con la tierra y el mar, siendo este maritorio el pilar fundamental para el desarrollo de su identidad.
Therefore, it is the maritime environment that defines the identity of Chiloé. This identity can be understood from two perspectives: the tangible and the intangible. In the tangible realm, we find structures like stilt houses, churches, boats, and wooden artifacts—all physical manifestations. On the other hand, the intangible aspect represents the essence of Chilote daily life, including festivals, typical recipes of Chilote gastronomy, mythology, artisanal techniques, musical expressions, and traditional occupations.
Por lo tanto, es el maritorio el que define la identidad de Chiloé. Esta identidad se puede comprender desde dos aristas, lo tangible y lo intangible… en lo tangible podemos encontrar los palafitos, las iglesias, los botes, los artilugios confeccionados en madera… todas las obras y elementos físicos… por otro lado, tenemos lo intangible, que representa la esencia de la vida cotidiana chilota, tales como festivales, las recetas típicas de la gastronomía chilota, la mitología, las técnicas artesanales, expresiones musicales, los oficios tradicionales, etc.
However, this heritage is currently in a weakened state due to various socio-cultural factors, primarily stemming from globalization. These include migratory phenomena driven by the pursuit of better educational and job opportunities, as well as the exploitation of natural resources by large industries, resulting in changes in productive activities by Chilotes.
Y es justamente este patrimonio el que en la actualidad se encuentra en un estado de debilitamiento… a que se refiere esto, existen distintas variables socioculturales que han afectado negativamente a la sociedad chilota, siendo principalmente consecuencias de la globalización, tales como; los fenómenos migratorios en búsqueda de mejores oportunidades educativas y laborales, la explotación de recursos naturales por parte de las grandes industrias, lo que tiene por consecuencia los cambios de actividades productivas por parte de los chilotes.
Therefore, it is crucial to address this issue as this situation is not sustainable over time and will lead to a loss of this heritage and a serious deterioration of the Chilote identity. Hence, from this perspective arises the question: How can architecture address this issue and contribute to the rehabilitation of Chiloé's intangible heritage?
Por lo tanto, es fundamental hacer frente a esta problemática ya que esta situación no es sostenible en el tiempo y desencadenará una pérdida de este patrimonio y un grave deterioro de la identidad chilota. Entonces, desde esta perspectiva surge la pregunta ¿De que manera la arquitectura puede abordar esta problemática y contribuir a la rehabilitación del patrimonio intangible de Chiloé?
The concept of "Catalizador" is then introduced, defined as an architectural space where various activities occur, whether or not they are related, that when combined, enhance the place and promote its development... In simpler terms, imagine it as a time capsule where seeds are planted, nurtured, and preserved over time, with the characteristic of remaining alive. That is the main objective of the proposal: to keep this heritage alive, as these activities are happening inside, unlike a museum, which is exhibitionist, where one goes to observe an inert object taken out of its context, its natural environment, and suffers a significant loss of significance. This is a clear example of the challenge involved in addressing intangible heritage, of materializing the immaterial without falling into the figurative or the literal.
Se plantea el concepto de "catalizador", que se refiere a un espacio arquitectónico donde ocurren diversas actividades que pueden estar relacionadas entre sí o no, pero que al unirse potencian el lugar y promueven su desarrollo. En términos más simples, se puede pensar en ello como una cápsula del tiempo donde se cultivan, cuidan y conservan semillas a lo largo del tiempo, manteniéndolas vivas. El objetivo principal es mantener este patrimonio vivo, ya que las actividades están sucediendo en el interior, a diferencia de un museo donde se observa un objeto inerte, fuera de su contexto natural, lo que conlleva una pérdida de significado. Este ejemplo ilustra el desafío de abordar el patrimonio intangible, de darle forma a lo inmaterial sin caer en lo figurativo ni en lo literal.
